The Shotgun Double Flex is a 2×2 spread alignment that has the runningback aligned to the right of the quarterback. The flanker and split end line up off the line of scrimmage, while the right and left and inside slot receivers line up on the line of scrimmage. We may motion the flanker or split end to help them beat bump-n-run man coverage.

Four Verticals

The Shotgun Double Flex – Four Vertical sends four receivers deep on vertical routes. It is highly effective against Cover 2 zone and Cover 3 coverage, but also can be ran against Cover 0 and Cover 1.

HB Mid Draw

The Shotgun Double Flex – HB Mid Draw spreads the defense out by having the receivers line up in a 2×2 look. The quarterback drops back as if to pass. He then hands the ball to runningback, who looks for an open hole to run through.

Mesh

A popular passing concept that can be found in the Shotgun Double Flex is called Mesh. This play has the two slot receivers running shallow crossing routes or mesh concept.

PA Dig

A route combination that we like to attack zone coverage with can be found in the play called Shotgun Double Flex – PA Dig. The route combination is the Dig/Seam combo.

PA FL Screen

The Shotgun Double Flex – PA FL Screen is similar to the FL Screen. The only real difference is play action has been added, other than that it’s the same play.

Y Cross Flood

A play out of the Shotgun Double Flex that many players in the past would run to attack man coverage is called Y Cross Flood. The reason for this is the crossing route ran by the right slot receiver. However, crossing routes are not as effective against man coverage as they once were.

Y Stick

One of favorite passing concepts to run over the years has been the Stick concept. A play from the Shotgun Doubles Flex that uses the Stick concept is Y Stick.
