I’m coach Ron here to bring you a look at the Cover 0 defense. The first thing that you must understand is that with this defense you have no help deep. We are bringing our Safeties up to cover either WR’s or TE’s depending on the personnel that the offense comes out in. Most of the time when you are facing a I Formation offense, the Strong Safety will come up some in the box to pick up the TE, and the Free Safety will pick up the HB no matter what side of the line he goes to. We run Cover 0 in order to cover any possible receivers along with freeing up our Linebackers to go after the Quarterback. Now it is crucial that your defensive players know exactly who they are covering so they we don’t leave any free receivers for the Quarterback to throw the ball to. You have to get your players to communicate to each other at the line of scrimmage, and also have trust in each to cover every receiver.

Now that your secondary is matched up with a receiver, we are going to use our D-line and our Linebackers to rush every gap in the line. First you are going to want both of your Defensive Ends to attack the corners of the line making the Offensive Tackles step out to block them. This movement will then make the Offensive Guard have to decide weather to block the SLB coming through the C Gap, or block the Defensive Tackle coming through the B Gap. Either way you should have at least one open gap on both sides of the line. This defense is great for getting after a QB or shutting down a team that runs the ball up the middle all game long. The only area that you have to worry about is your CB’s not being fast enough to keep up with the WR’s on the outside. Now it’s time to hit the field, good luck coaches!
