In this Inside the Playbook video breakdown, we take a look at the Xs’ and O’s behind a passing play that Pittsburgh ran against Baltimore of their week 9 match up of the 2011 season. We call this play Shotgun Trio HB Wk – X Deep In.

The Shotgun Trio HB Wk – X Deep In sends four receivers out on pass routes.  They are as follows:

Pass Routes

  • Z – 15 Yard Curl
  • H – Seam
  • Y – 15 Yard Curl
  • X – 20 Yard Deep In
  • HB – Pass Block

The receiver we focus in on for this X’s and O’s breakdown is the X receiver, who runs a 20 yard deep in.

The pass coverage called is Cover 0. There are five defenders matched up in one on one man coverage, while 6 defenders rush the quarterback. The left cornerback is matched up against the X receiver.

Since the halfback stays into pass block, the strong safety drops back into deep pass coverage.

As the X receiver breakdowns towards the middle on his deep in route, he is able to gain separation from the left cornerback. The Pittsburgh quarterback delivers a strike for a 22 yard pick up.
