A new defense in Madden 13 this year that features four defensive ends on the field at the same time is called the NASCAR” package. Together, Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Mathias Kiwanuka  combine to form “NASCAR” package that the Giants like to run.

Note: the following breakdown is taken from the Gridiron Guide 13.

nascar

What makes this package so special is the speed the Giants defensive ends. By having all four of them on the field at the same time, they can get to quarterback quickly. With them able to get pressure on the quarterback, they don’t have to blitz. However, in real life, the Giants like to create stunts with their talented four defensive linemen when running the NASCAR package. Unfortunately none of the 24 defenses in the formation have just the four of them stunting. That said, that’s not to say you can’t create stunts yourself.

Gridiron Guide Tip: You don’t need to use the Giants to use this formation, you can always call the Nickel Normal and then sub out the defensive tackles, with two defensive ends. Now you have created the NASCAR package. If you don’t have enough fast defensive ends, simple sub a linebacker or the defensive end position, and move the defensive ends inside at the defensive tackle positions. There is another difference between the Nickel Normal and NASCAR Normal defense and that’s an extra FS is added into the line up as he replaces the NB.

NASCAR Package Blitz Schemes

Below we take a look at three blitz schemes from the NASCAR Package that we like to run in the game this year.

NASCAR Normal – Sugar Buzz

The first NASCAR Normal  defensive blitz scheme we are going to show is the Sugar Buzz. The pressure we are looking to get is from the RE.

Quick Set Up:

  1. Re-hot route the SDT to blitz.
  2. Hot route the MLB into a hook zone.
  3. While in control of the MLB, hold the strafe (LT, L2) button before the snap.
  4. Once the ball is snapped, continue to hold strafe button.
  5. Once the RE gets past the line of scrimmage, drop or release the MLB into pass coverage.

The default play design of the NASCAR Normal – Sugar Buzz sends 6 pass rushers at the quarterback. Both the MLB and LOLB line up near the line of scrimmage in the A (Sugar) gaps. There are five defenders in man coverage. Notice this defense is a Cover 0 defense, meaning there are no defenders playing deep zone coverage.

To set this defense up to get pressure from the RE, we need to make two pre-snap adjustments. First, we re-hot route the SDT (DE, who plays inside of the LE) on a blitz.

Gridiron Guide Tip: Although the NASCAR package has four defensive ends on the line of scrimmage, we refer to them still as RE, WDT, SDT, and LE.

The other pre-snap-adjustment we need to make is to hot route the MLB into a hook zone.

nascar-sugar-buzz-4

Here is what the defensive set up looks like once we make those two pre-snap adjustments.

nascar-sugar-buzz-6

In the image above, we show what the pass blocking assignments look like before the snap. Notice, the one defender not blocked is the RE.

nascar-sugar-buzz-7

Once the ball is snapped,  we continue to hold down the strafe button. By doing this, the LG will look to block the MLB.

nascar-sugar-buzz-8

Just as the RE crosses the line of scrimmage, we release or manually drop the MLB back into pass coverage.

nascar-sugar-buzz-9

The LG will try to block the RE once we release the MLB, but he will be to late. The result is a sack on the quarterback by the RE.

Gridiron Guide Tip: If you rather have the LE apply the pressure, simply take control of the LOLB and hot route him into a hook zone. Before the snap hold the strafe button down. Once the ball is snapped, wait for the LE to get past the line of scrimmage, then release or manually drop the LOLB back into pass coverage.

NASCAR Normal – Odd LB Dogs

The second NASCAR Normal defensive blitz set up we want to show is called Odd LB Dogs. We use the same technique that we did for the Sugar Buzz set up by taking control of a defender before snap and holding the strafe button down.

Quick Set Up:

  1. Take control of the LOLB and align him across from the RG.
  2. While in control of the LOLB, hold the strafe (LT, L2) button before the snap.
  3. Once the ball is snapped, continue to hold strafe button.
  4. Once the LE gets past the line of scrimmage, drop or release the LOLB into pass coverage.

The NASCAR Normal – Odd LB Dogs is another Cover 0 defense. By default, it sends 6 pass rushers after the quarterback, while 5 defenders play man coverage.

Two key differences between the Sugar Buzz and Odd LB Dogs is the SDT (IDE) lines up over the C.

The WDT (Inside IDE) stands up over the LG.

To set the blitz up, we take control of the LOLB and move down near line of scrimmage. We want him to head up over the RG.

Here is what the set up looks like once the pre-snap adjustments have been made. Notice in the image above, it looks like we are creating and overload to the left side of the offensive line. That’s actually not the case.

le-blitz

The defender that will apply the pressure is the LE. Notice how the pass blocking shapes up.

Once the ball is snapped, the RT will slide in to block the LOLB.

gun-doubles-on-vs-nascar-odd-lb-dogs-8

This allows the LE to have a clean shot at the QB from the right side of the of the offensive line.

Once the LE gets past the line of scrimmage, we release or manually drop the LOLB back in pass coverage.

Gridiron Guide Tip: If the RB were to stay into pass block, he will look to chip the LE. If the RB is able to get a chip on the LE, then the QB will have time to find an open receiver.

NASCAR Normal – Sugar 3 DB Fire

The first two NASCAR Normal  defensive blitzes we have shown so far have been man coverage, cover 0 schemes. For our third and final NASCAR Normal blitz scheme, we are going to show a zone blitz scheme. The pressure we are looking to get is from the FS1, who lines up at the NB position.

Quick Set Up:

  1. Pinch the defensive line.
  2. Move the FS1 just outside of the RE. He line up closer to the line of scrimmage.
  3. Take control of the MLB, and hold the strafe (LT, L2) button before the snap.
  4. Once the ball is snapped, continue to hold strafe button.
  5. Once the FS1 gets past the line of scrimmage, drop or release the MLB into pass coverage.

The name of the defense we use for this set up is called NASCAR Normal – Sugar 3 DB Fire. As the play name indicates, it’s Cover 3 defense, with a defensive back blitzing. In this cases, it’s the FS1, who lines up at the nickleback position.

To set the defense up, pinch the defensive line.

Next, take control of the FS1 and move him outside of the RE. He should line up near the line of scrimmage.

Next, switch to the MLB, who is playing a hook zone. While in control of the MLB hold the strafe (LT, L2) button before the snap.

Here is look at the defense once the pre-snap adjustments have been made.

Once the ball is snapped, while in control of the MLB, continue to hold strafe button. The C will look to block him.

gun-doubles-on-vs-nascar-sugar-3-db-fire-8

With the C looking towards the MLB, the FS will have a clear shot the quarterback.

Once the FS gets past the line of scrimmage, release or manually drop the MLB back in pass coverage.

Final Thoughts

There are few other blitz schemes from the NASCAR Normal defense that can be created to bring inside or outside pressure. Go into lab and play around a bit as you will find how easy it is to generate pressure from this defense.
