In this football play breakdown for the X’s O’s Football Virtual Playbook we take a look at a passing play out of the Singleback Wing Trio. The name of the play is called Z Spot. This particular passing play is very effective at beating zone coverage as it often creates a 3-on-2 read for the quarterback.

The Singleback Wing Trio – Z Spot has the Z (flanker) running a spot (slant hook) route. The other pass routes are as follows, the X (split end) receiver runs a 3 yard slant, the Y (tight end) runs a shoot route towards the right flat, the H (slot) runs a corner route, and the RB (runningback) stays into pass block to left.

For those that play football video games, many players will often look to the throw to the Y receiver runnning the shoot route towards the flat first. If he is not open, then look to throw the Z receiver running the spot route.

Another receiver players may look to throw to first is the X receiver, who runs a backside slant.

The defensive coverage we show for this football play breakdown is Cover 3.

Against this particular Cover 3 coverage, the LDB (left defensive back) goes to the tight end (Y) in the right flat, while the SS (strong safety) covers the slot receiver (H).

Notice in the image above, there is a 3-on-2 read for the quarterback. The receiver that is not covered is the flanker (Z).

The quarterback spots the flanker open and makes the throw towards him.

The flanker makes the catch for a 7 yard pick up.
