In this X’s O’s Football Video Games breakdown for Madden 13, we take a look at a passing play that we like to run against bump-n-run man coverage from the Strong Close formation. The play we want to take a look at from the Strong Close formation is the DBL Stutter Go.

strong-close-dbl-stutter-go The Strong Close – DBL Stutter Go has the split end (X) and flanker (B) both running mirror on both sides of the field. The pass routes they are essentially stop-n-go routes. The tight end (A) runs a spot (slant hook) over the short middle of the field. The fullback (RB) runs a flat route towards the right. The halfback stays into pass block to the left.

Playbooks Found In:

  • Redskins
  • Steelers
  • Texans

Quick Set Up Vs Man Coverage:

  • None

Pass Reads Vs Man Coverage:

  • Look to throw to the FL shortly after the ball is snapped against bump-n-run man coverage. Watch to see if the cornerback initially over plays his route.
  • Look for the SE just as he stutters (stops) against bump-n-run man coverage, before going up the field.
  • The TE may also be an option his slant hook.

Coaching Points Vs Man Coverage:

  • When throwing the ball to the FL, be sure to pass lead the ball to the outside by throwing hard right.
  • If your opponent doesn’t call a lot of man blitz schemes, consider hot routing the HB on a swing route to give yourself another option to throw to.
  • The SE’s stop n go route may be open, but it depends on the cornerback covering him, plus the receivers running the pass route. If the cornerback is in man coverage and has a high man coverage rating and the receiver has a high route running rating, there is a good chance that he will be open shortly after the ball is snapped.
