A popular passing play that teams run to attack zone coverage. The name of the play is called 50 X Deep Post. For this breakdown, we use the Strong Pro set.

For this breakdown, the X receiver, who is running 12 yard post route, is our primary receiver. The rest of the passing routes are as follows, the Y receiver runs a 12 yard corner, the Z receiver runs a 10 yard curl, the HB runs a swing route to the left, and the FB runs a flat to the right.

The defensive coverage we use for this breakdown is Cover 3. Three defenders (RCB, FS, and LCB), play 3 deep coverage, while the four defenders (WLB, MLB, SLB, and SS) play zone coverage underneath.

In the screen shot above, we illustrate how the QB reads his progressions.

If the FS cheats over’s towards right side, the QB should look look to throw to the X receiver on the post.

He must also look at the under coverage. If defender ( in this case the MLB) should drop back, he will need to make sure his has enough air the ball to get it over the defender.

The SE makes a the catch 30 yards down the field.
